St Mary’s College acknowledges the importance of refining our student’s curiosities, creativities and abilities to connect and communicate with others as 21st century skills. Innovation is a key area in our students’ educational journeys; therefore, we prioritise immersive, informative and exciting avenues for our students to challenge, extend and nourish their passions.
An experiential learning approach is taken to subjects including English, History and Social Sciences, allowing students to participate in extracurricular activities including History and Politics Club, Debating and production of Behind the Franklin, our student-led and inspired digital newspaper. Our student’s skill development is further refined by theatre and museum visits, guest performers, and competitions.
The Student Led Newspaper
Behind the Franklin is St Mary’s digital magazine curated, written and designed by students for students. A key component of the magazine is student voice.
The editorial team meet weekly to discuss content, write articles and design layouts. The students involved range from Year 5 to Year 12, but the newspaper’s content aims to reach the entire College community. The newspaper follows themed editions, is open to student writing and artworks, and has a continuous focus on the theme of strong women.
Behind the Franklin is an innovative and entertaining way for students to hone their skills, whether that be in writing, design or teamwork. Students involved gain the ability to work alongside others, make tough editorial decisions and communicate with the entire cohort to obtain writing and artwork whilst building an audience.
