St Mary's College Middle School | Year 7 to 9

The Middle Years are a time of growth, exploration and self-discovery. At St Mary’s College, we understand that this stage brings both growth and challenge - new friendships, new interests, and a growing sense of identity. Our Middle School is designed to support each girl through this journey, nurturing her curiosity, building her confidence, and guiding her as she begins to understand who she is and who she is becoming.

A Community That Knows Her by Name

Every Middle School student belongs to a Care Group, led by a dedicated teacher who knows her as an individual - her strengths, struggles, passions and potential. Supported by our Middle School Leadership Team, this structure ensures consistent care across learning, wellbeing and spiritual life.

At St Mary’s, being known matters. Through strong relationships and our WRAP program (Wellbeing, Relationships, Agency, Personal Growth), each student is supported to feel connected, valued and understood. When challenges arise, there is always a trusted adult ready to listen and respond - part of a community built on connection and belonging.

A Curriculum That Opens Doors

In Years 7 to 9, students engage in a broad and balanced curriculum across all key learning areas, including English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Languages, the Arts, and Health and Physical Education. Our approach combines explicit teaching with opportunities for inquiry, critical thinking and creativity.

As students progress through Years 8 and 9, they begin to choose elective subjects aligned with their interests and aspirations - an important step in shaping their individual learning pathway. Families are supported through this process with ongoing communication, parent evenings and student pathway guidance.

Growing Confidence Beyond the Classroom

Learning in the Middle Years extends well beyond the classroom. A rich co-curricular program - including sport, performing arts, clubs, STEM and leadership opportunities - encourages students to explore new interests, build resilience and develop confidence.

Camps and retreats are a valued part of the Middle School experience, with students participating in opportunities at Woodhouse, Victor Harbor and the Grampians. These shared experiences foster independence, strengthen friendships and support personal growth in meaningful and lasting ways.

Wellbeing at the Centre

Wellbeing is embedded in every aspect of Middle School at St Mary’s College. Our WRAP program is delivered weekly, supporting students to develop essential social and emotional skills such as empathy, respectful relationships, resilience and self-awareness.

Our Health and Wellbeing Centre provides additional support, with qualified staff working closely with students, families and teachers. This integrated approach ensures that each girl is supported not only academically, but personally and socially as she grows.

Programs such as Big Sister create meaningful connections across year levels, with Senior School students mentoring Year 7 girls and contributing to a strong, supportive College community. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning while being supported to build balance, resilience and wellbeing.

The Path to Senior School

By the end of Year 9, students are well prepared for the transition to Senior School. They move forward with confidence, a strong sense of identity, and a clear understanding of their strengths and interests.

As part of a connected Reception to Year 12 community on one campus, this transition is seamless. Students step into the next stage of their learning supported by familiar relationships, a strong foundation, and the confidence to embrace new opportunities.
